Douglas A. Feldman, Ph.D. is Professor of Anthropology at The College at Brock port, State University of New York, former Chair of the Department of Anthropology, and former President of the Society for Medical Anthropology. He is author/editor of seven books about HIV/AIDS and anthropology, most recently AIDS, Culture, and Gay Men. He has conducted social research on HIV/AIDS in the United States, Hungary, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, and Senegal. He is the recipient of the Kimball Award for Public and Applied Anthropology, and the Distinguished Service Award of the AIDS and Anthropology Research Group.

He is author/editor of seven books about HIV/AIDS and anthropology, most recently AIDS, Culture, and Gay Men. He has conducted social research on HIV/AIDS in the United States, Hungary, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, and Senegal.

Thomas R (Bob) Konrad, Ph.D. is a medical sociologist and professor emeritus in the Dept. of Health Policy and Management, Gillings Global School of Public Health at UNC-CH. As a fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and Senior Scientist at the NC Institute on Aging, Dr. Konrad conducted health services research studies on workforce, organization, and quality of care. In the last decade he has focused on frontline health workers employed in settings focused on low income populations, directing the RWJF’s national evaluation of Jobs to Careers program. Dr. Konrad works with organizations, communities, and educational institutions to develop career paths for low income health and social care workers. He serves a consultant for the evaluation of inter-disciplinary Geriatric Team Training at Duke University and as a principal in the firm Health Workforce Analytics. He currently serves as co-principal investigator for a nation study of health workforce development being conducted for the US DHHS by Abt Associates.

David Sleet, Ph.D., is an independent consultant who served for 15 years as the Associate Director for Science for the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at the National Center for Injury Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the senior advisor on matters of science and policy before retiring in 2016. Before joining CDC, he was a tenured Professor in public health at San Diego State University, directed the Road Accident Research Unit at University of Western Australia, was a visiting scientist for 4 years at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US, and was a researcher at VTT (the Road Safety Agency) in Finland.

He has published more than 200 articles related to injury prevention and health with a focus on behavioral and social science, and co-authored the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention the Handbook of Injury and Violence Prevention, and Injury and Violence Prevention: Behavioral Science Theories, Methods and Applications. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Health Behavior and on the Editorial Board of 7 journals.

Among his other publications are Hegel, Marx and the English State (Westview Press, 1992; University of Toronto Press, 1996); Hegel and Marx After the Fall of Communism (Wales University Press, 1998), and numerous articles on Hegel and Marx. He is contributing editor, along with Terry Gillin and Tom Klassen, to Time's Up: Mandatory Retirement in Canada (James Lorimer, 2005).

He has served as professor and Applied Business Institute research professor and consultant, department chair, institute director and president of the faculty senate at the Rinker School at Palm Beach Atlantic University; and currently serves as adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University (public safety), Florida International University (public health), and Central Michigan University (clinical research administration). He is Assistant Editor and Book Review Editor for White House Studies, Discussion Papers Editor for The Innovation Journal; and Book Review Editor for the Journal of Public Affairs Education; and is a frequent contributor to Public Health (UK) and Perspectives in Public Health (UK). Johannes Siegrist, PhD., born 1943 in Switzerland, is Senior Professor of Work Stress Research at the University of Duesseldorf, Germany. Until 2012 he was Professor and Director of the Institute of Medical Sociology at that University. He is known as the author of one of the internationally established models of stressful work, ‘effort-reward imbalance’ and as a scientist contributing to research on social determinants of health and health inequalities by several hundred scientific publications including distinct books. Basic’s dissertation ‘‘when collaboration becomes a struggle. A sociological analysis of a project in the Swedish juvenile care’’ is based on ethnographic material. Currently analyzing: (1) narratives of youth that have experienced war, taken refuge in Sweden, and taken into custody and placed in institutions; (2) the obscure practices and rhetoric of the war, the emotions and moral of the war, human interaction during horrific captivity and escape but also the individuals requirements on restored respect and dignity when war experiences portrayed in the life stories; (3) the collaboration between border police and coastguard and between different actors in the youth care; (4) definitions of successful intelligence and operational police work.

Dr. Amit Prasad is an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Director of South Asian Studies Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

His research focuses on transnational features of medical technology innovations and healthcare. In particular, he investigates how technical aspects of innovations are entangled with socio-cultural and economic factors in different nations. His broader goal has been to highlight the role of transnational flows of knowledge, artifacts, and people in medical innovations, which, as he shows in his published work, are often hidden as such because of commonly accepted understanding of the process of invention and national cultures. His book, Imperial Technoscience: Transnational Histories of MRI in the United States, Britain, and India (MIT Press, 2014), for example, argues that if we move beyond accepted divides such as that between west/non-west, invention/innovation/diffusion, culture/science, etc. a very vibrant, albeit hierarchical, transnational history of medical innovation, development, and diffusion comes to light. He has also published articles on the shift in visual culture of medicine with the emergence of technologies such as MRI. Presently, drawing on an ethnographic study of a stem cell clinic in Delhi, India, interviews of policy makers, analysis of patients’ blogs and videos, and newspaper reports, he is writing a book that is tentatively titled Miracle or Science: Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy Clinic.

Zofia Slonska , PhD, sociologist, Assistant Professor, Deputy Head of the Department of Epidemiology, Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski Institute of Cardiology and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion, Centre of Postgraduate Education. Dr Sylla Thiam is a highly accomplished senior manager, with fifteen years’ experience of health management and leadership across Africa particularly in Senegal, Guinea, Central African Republic, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Africa and South Sudan. Currently he is the Director of Amref Health Africa’s Regional hub in West Africa based in Senegal. Prior to that he was the Technical Director for Infectious Diseases based in Amref Health Africa Headquarters in Nairobi. He worked with the Ministry of Health in Senegal in various positions at district and national levels. He is a medical doctor specialized in public health and epidemiology. He holds a Master in Population Development and Health Sciences from Cheikh A Diop University (Dakar-Senegal). He also obtains a Master in Public Health and Health Management and a diploma of epidemiology and biostatics at Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris-France). In addition he holds a MBA in Health Leadership and Management (Kenya). He has worked in public, private sectors as well as in the humanitarian domain with a strong experience in designing, implementing and assessing health programs, building and maintaining partnership at various levels.
